About this project
The marine biological diversity of the Kingdom of Tonga is critical to the wellbeing of its people and the foundation of their lifestyle. The Tongan economy heavily relies on the fisheries and marine resources, which in turn depend on the countrys rich biological diversity. However, this rich biological diversity is under threat from multiple sources, including habitat loss, degradation, overexploitation, invasive alien species, pollution, and climate change. Without its wetland and marine biodiversity, Tonga would lose its aesthetic, spiritual, and educational values, which are integral to the peoples wellbeing and traditional way of life. The GEF project is both timely and essential in protecting Tongas indigenous marine species and ecosystems from destructive activities, halting wetland degradation, and restoring degraded mangrove, coral, and seagrass areas. The project aims to control unsustainable resource use and mitigate climate-induced risks through a holistic and integrated Ridge to Reef management approach that builds on the lessons and experiences from the R2R Phase I project. The project will employ an integrated approach consisting of strengthened and effective governance, enhanced capacity for planning and implementing marine resource management strategies built on a solid foundation of a whole-of-community participation, gender equity and social inclusion (GESI) responsive interventions complemented by the development of resilient blue/green livelihoods.
