About this project

The project objective is to consolidate and operationalize the national access and benefit sharing (ABS) legal and institutional framework, including through the development of pilot ABS products and value chains, to enable appropriate access to genetic resources in Morocco and fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from their utilization, for sustainable rural development and the sustainable use of globally significant biodiversity and ecosystems. This will be achieved through five interrelated components that will allow consolidating the national ABS framework and national and local capacity and knowledge, and the development of new ABS products and value chains derived from genetic resources while contributing to biodiversity governance and conservation. This strategy will reduce threats to biodiversity and genetic resources in three landscapes delivering global environmental benefits including 34,000 hectares (ha) of landscapes under improved practices and will directly benefit 3,000 people (1,500 female and 1,500 male). The project will have a duration of 5 years with a total investment of USD 4,726,620, USD 1,776,620 of which will be provided by the Global Environment Facility.
