About this project

Climate background and institutional and policy context: Yemen is one of the worlds most vulnerable nations to climate change and one of the least equipped to mitigate or adapt to its consequences ranking 171st out of 181 countries (ND-GAIN Index, 2022).4 Climate-related hazards include extreme temperatures, floods, landslides, sea level rise, and droughts.5 Between 2008 - 2020, Yemen was hit by an average of 34 floods.6 In June 2022 alone, floods affected over 41,000 people in the country.7 Since 2008, approximately 700,000 internal displacements have occurred due to extreme events, with flooding accounting for roughly 85 percent of these displacements.8 Yemen’s temperatures are projected (SSP3-7.0) to increase further but vary regionally. The national-level mean annual temperature increases from 25.40°C (1995–2014) to 26.16°C for the period 2020–2039, and to 27.02°C for the period 2040–2059
