About this project
Eswatini is increasingly experiencing the adverse impacts of several climate hazards. These hazards include increasing temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns and an increase in the frequency, intensity and duration of extreme weather events such as droughts and floods. A primary adverse impact is the decreased availability of water, which poses a significant threat to the country’s water security. Reduced water availability has cascading negative repercussions on Eswatini’s economy, affecting water-dependent sectors such as agriculture, energy, mining, and industry. Moreover, water scarcity leads to reduced productivity in ecosystems, which is crucial for the provision of essential ecosystem resources and services across various sectors. The adverse impacts of climate change in Eswatini are further intensified by land use and land management practices that result in ecosystem degradation, thus impairing the provision of ecosystem resources and services vital for the economy’s sustainability. The proposed project aims to address these adverse climate impacts and unsustainable land management practices through the implementation of a Catchment Investment Programme (CIP). The CIP, a Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) mechanism, is designed to deliver long-term, sustainable Nature-based Solutions (NbS) that enhance essential catchment services, including improving water quantity, water quality and minimising erosion. The NbS proposed for this project are: i) ecosystem restora…
