About this project
The project aims to address the current and future development pressures on the biologically rich terrestrial, coastal, and marine ecosystems in the Southern and Eastern regions of Sri Lanka. Emerging economic pathways are expected to accelerate habitat encroachment, promote destructive harvesting practices, increase pollution and invasive species proliferation, and exacerbate the impacts of climate change. These pressures threaten critical ecosystem services that support livelihoods, biodiversity, and disaster resilience. To address these challenges, the project adopts a holistic, multi-disciplinary, and multi-sectoral approach that integrates biodiversity conservation with sustainable development. It will promote an integrated and coordinated framework for planning and managing ecosystems, engaging all sectors and local communities that impact or depend on these ecosystems. The intervention pathways include strengthening governance, policies, and institutional capacities for integrated landscape and seascape management, fostering financing and incentives for nature-positive practices, and demonstrating ecosystem-based management and nature-based solutions with potential for replication and scaling.
