About this project

The overall objective of the project is to enhance food security and build resilience in rural communities by addressing key agricultural challenges. The project will focus on increasing the production of drought-resistant traditional grains such as sorghum, millet, and other resilient crops, which are essential for improving food security in drought-prone areas of Chivi and Mwenezi districts of Zimbabwe. To mitigate the damage caused by crop pests, particularly red-billed quelea birds (Quelea quelea), which account for up to 40% of crop losses, the project will implement innovative technologies to protect crops and reduce yield losses. In addition, novel technologies will be applied to improve soil water retention and crop nutrition, ensuring better yields during dry spells and enhancing overall agricultural efficiency. The project will also strengthen the resilience of smallholder farmers and rural communities by improving their capacity to adapt to climate change and mitigate the impacts of extreme weather events. This will include enhancing access to climate information, promoting climate-smart agricultural practices, and supporting community-driven resilience initiatives to ensure sustainable food security in the long term.
