About this project

The global biodiversity financing gap is estimated at US$700 billion annually, highlighting the urgent need for transformative change across economies and societies. To meet the targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), countries must increase financial resources, improve efficiency, and reduce harmful financial flows. However, key barriers include limited awareness, poor coordination, lack of data, and insufficient use of biodiversity finance solutions. To address these challenges, Target 19 of the GBF calls on countries to develop National Biodiversity Finance Plans (BFPs). These plans should identify finance gaps, root causes of biodiversity loss, and strategies to mobilize resources through a mix of solutions. The project, building on UNDP’s BIOFIN experience, aims to support countries in diagnostics, capacity building, and finance plan development through inclusive, multi-stakeholder approaches involving ministries, the private sector, and civil society.
