About this project

The objective of the GEF PPG is to develop the project concept into a full project: Enhancing the Conservation in the Tian-Shan Mountain regions in Central and Eastern Kyrgyzstan. As described in the project concept (PIF/child project concept note), this project aims to preserve local and global biodiversity and promote rational use of natural resources in the Central and Eastern regions of Kyrgyzstan. These globally significant Tien-Shan Mountain areas encompass protected areas (PAs), Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs), Important Bird Areas (IBAs), and Ramsar wetlands like Lakes Issyk-Kul, Son-Kul, and Chatyr-Kul, hosting endangered species such as the snow leopard, Marco Polo sheep, and Siberian ibex. The region supports critical ecological services (water regulation, carbon sequestration) and Kyrgyzstan’s nomadic heritage, but faces threats from overgrazing, poaching, pollution, mining, tourism, and climate change.
