About this project

The rehabilitation of the solar-powered water supply system on Atauro Island is not merely a technical fix; it is a vital intervention to restore a fundamental human right: access to clean, reliable water for 1,259 residents of Suco Beloi and Suco Biqueli. For years, these communities have endured the hardship of walking up to 13 kilometers daily to collect water, relying on rainwater harvesting that often runs dry. The ACCESS project was initiated to provide a permanent, sustainable solution using solar power, but the initial implementation encountered significant setbacks due to unforeseen complexities in the island’s terrain and hydrology.
