About this project

The objective of the GEF PPG is to develop the project concept into a full project: Integrated Land and Water Management (ILWM) for enhanced goods and services in Libya. As described in the project concept, this project aims to address critical environmental threats for ecosystems and communities in the Ubari Lakes Basin, Libya, including desertification and land degradation; pollution from oil extraction; unsustainable hunting and plant collection; and the exacerbating impacts of climate change. The projects objective is to stop and reverse ecosystem, biodiversity and land degradation in the Ubari Lakes Basin through introduction of Integrated Land and Water Management (ILWM). ILWM aims to harmonize environmental conservation with national economic development, ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources. Key project strategies (components) include (1) strengthening policy, planning, and institutional frameworks for ILWM; (2) implementing collaborative ILWM approaches; (3) enhancing ILWM knowledge management and lesson sharing; and (4) establishing a robust monitoring and evaluation system.
