About this project

The Gambia is a small, least developed country with a GDP of US$2.4 billion (2023–2024). The economy is heavily reliant on agriculture and services, contributing 24.1% and 53.9% of GDP, respectively. Despite facing global economic challenges, the Gambian economy has shown remarkable resilience, with GDP growth projected to remain below pre-COVID-19 levels at 5.7% in 2024 . However, poverty and inequality remain widespread, with 53.4% of the population living on less than $1.90 per day. Access to basic services like electricity, drinking water, and sanitation is uneven. The Gambia government has developed the Recovery-Focused National Development Plan (RF-NDP) 2023-2027 to address these challenges. The RF-NDP prioritizes investment in agriculture, access to clean and safe drinking water, energy access, and youth empowerment. The PACD project, aligned with the RF-NDP, aims to improve access to portable water, rural electrification, food security, youth empowerment, and sustainability. The PACD project will provide 55 new solar powered water supply system, access to electricity in 54 rural and 18 Peri-urban communities, procure 207 tractors, accessories and assorted labour-saving devices. It will also provide livelihood skills training, access to finance for youth MSMEs, and establish 3 model farms as pilot. Sustainability measures include establishing a PMU, implementing a GIS, conducting capacity-building workshops, and promoting environmental stewardship.
