About this project
This global multi-country initiative supports Kazakhstan, Türkiye, Uzbekistan, Botswana, and Uganda to accelerate their transition from linear waste practices to inclusive, sustainable circular economy systems. Although the countries differ in context, they share common constraints, including rising waste volumes, limited recycling infrastructure, and fragmented stakeholder coordination, highlighting the need for a coordinated systemic shift. The project responds by proposing activities that strengthen policies, institutions, and data systems, while piloting context-specific circular economy solutions that expand economic opportunities and improve environmental outcomes. Central to its approach is a strong commitment to gender equality and youth empowerment, with support for women- and youth-led enterprises, targeted access-to-finance mechanisms, and entrepreneurship skills development.Implementation will follow a unified set of outputs delivered jointly by five UNDP Country Offices, with technical backstopping and global coordination from the UNDP Chemicals and Waste Hub. This design allows for harmonized programming across countries while preserving flexibility for local adaptation. It also establishes a structured platform for cross-country learning and South–South cooperation, enabling countries to share innovations, scale proven models, and collectively strengthen circular economy ecosystems.
