About this project

The project supports Kazakhstan’s transition toward a circular economy by addressing systemic barriers in waste management, policy implementation, financing, and community engagement. Particular focus will be placed on the Caspian regions of Atyrau and Mangystau, which face growing waste management challenges linked to rapid industrial growth and plastic pollution affecting the Caspian Sea ecosystem. The project will strengthen evidence-based decision making through material flow and metabolic analysis, enhance policy and financing frameworks for circular economy investments, and pilot community-based circular business models involving women and youth.Through capacity building, awareness campaigns, innovation platforms and pilot initiatives, the project will help reduce waste pollution, improve waste management systems and create new green livelihood opportunities. The initiative contributes to Kazakhstan’s national priorities including the Green Economy Concept, Environmental Code, and Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2060, as well as efforts to promote sustainable public procurement mechanisms that stimulate demand for environmentally friendly and circular products. It also supports global commitments under the Sustainable Development Goals and international frameworks on waste and plastics management.
