About this project
PNG is facing a rapidly intensifying internal displacement crisis driven by the convergency of climate vulnerability, recurrent natural hazards, subnational conflict, land dispute and uneven state presence. Recent evidence confirms that displacement in PNG is no longer episodic but increasingly protracted and structural, with serious implications for development, peace, social cohesion, and human rights. PNGs capacity to prevent displacement and deliver durable solutions remains constrained by fragmented governance, weak subnational planning and financing capacity, and limited availability and use of reliable, disaggregated and conflict sensitive data. These gaps have contributed to reactive, short-term response that are insufficient to support sustainable local integration, safe return where feasible, or planned relocation when necessary. The proposed joint programme responds directly to these challenges by supporting GoPNG to operationalize its national commitments to durable solutions through institutionalization, evidence-based decision making, and scalable sub-national solutions pathways.
