About this project

Building on the Phase I assessment of marine monitoring along the Aqaba coastline and laying the foundation for the next phase of ASEZA’s 25-year monitoring programme, Phase II focuses on implementing the recommended upgrades over a three-year period. The project strengthens the Norway–Jordan partnership, in collaboration with the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) and other regional and international institutions, by deploying advanced technologies, including AI-based analysis, across five core workstreams: oceanography and water quality, fisheries assessment, benthic habitat mapping, data management, and a pilot marine pollution early warning system. The introduction of real-time sensors, coupled with institutional standard operating procedures (SOPs), will significantly enhance ASEZA’s capacity for risk-informed marine governance.Key deliverables include fisheries management plans, maps for the conservation of vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs), an integrated marine data platform, and comprehensive capacity-building programmes. In parallel, the project will pilot an integrated early warning system with real-time pollution monitoring and establish SOPs for pollution response. Collectively, these efforts aim to safeguard the Gulf of Aqaba’s coral reef climate refugium while advancing a sustainable blue economy and reinforcing Jordan’s regional leadership
