About this project
In the Kingdom of Bahrain, indiscriminate crossbreeding is threatening the local livestock breeds because conservation priorities are not set. Focusing on few highly productive breeds is a risky option that could induce diversity loss. The Kingdom of Bahrain has not implemented the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources 2007 (Interlaken, Switzerland). A strategy is needed to sustainably improve and conserve local genetic resources of the Kingdom of Bahrain. The FAO proposed project will contribute to a reversal of the ongoing trends of erosion and underutilization of Animal Genetic Resources (AnGR) for food security, sustainable agriculture and human well-being. It will strengthen the capacity of national partners and design a strategy to improve production and productivity of local breeds through the utilization of modern techniques in genetic improvement, improved health care, feeding, husbandry management while improving the cost structure of locally produced animals and animal products.
