About this project

The government of Sierra Leone faces numerous challenges including an unconducive business environment, a depreciating currency, reduced export revenues and high dependence on imports, limited investment in key sectors, poor education and health systems, and low infrastructure development. The ILO developed a project to address the complex challenges of local economic development in the four districts – Bo, Bombali, Kenema and Port Loko – through a value chain development approach centred on SMEs underpinned by feeder roads in selected districts to contribute to improved linkages between market actors. The strategy involves technical skills transfer in feeder road maintenance, value chain development, and entrepreneurial training, including access to finance and SME management. The intervention’s approach offers an integrated response to the intricate and interconnected obstacles impede effective implementation of poverty reduction initiatives in Sierra Leone
