About this project

ILO in Türkiye is providing support to Turkish constituents in developing policy measures to facilitate a just transition towards environmentally sustainable economies and societies through decent work, in line with the “ILO Guidelines for a just transition towards environmentally sustainable economies and societies for all. ILO will continue working with Turkish constituents to increase awareness and preparedness of the relevant labour market actors against the actions to be taken to comply with the Green Deal Action Plan of Türkiye. On February 6, 2023, the south-eastern provinces of Türkiye and the north-western governorates of Syria were hit by a powerful earthquake of 7.8 magnitude. Nine hours later the center of Kahramanmaras was struck by a second quake of 7.5 magnitude, causing massive damage on an already weakened infrastructure. Two weeks later, on February 20, another earthquake of 6.4 magnitude was felt in Hatay, this one primarily affecting the Defne district and its vicinity. More than 50 thousand people were killed in the earthquakes and hundred thousands were injured. ILO implemented comprehensive researches on the situation of the labour market following the earthquakes and will continue to provide technical support for the recovery with an emphasis on ensuring decent and sustainable jobs in the earthquake region with a focus on occupational health and safety.
