Strengthening the Health Resilience of Communities Vulnerable to Climate Change in Benin’s ABD (Adjohoun, Bonou and Dangbo) Zone

About this project

Benin, particularly the Adjohoun, Bonou, and Dangbo (ABD) zone in the Ouémé department, faces significant exposure to climate change impacts, including increasing temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, and extreme events such as floods, and extreme heat which exacerbate climate-sensitive diseases. This project, building on Benin’s national strategies for climate adaptation and health system strengthening, targets the ABD zone to enhance the climate resilience of vulnerable communities and local health systems. The area is experiencing increasing incidence of floods, vector-borne disease outbreaks, and infrastructure vulnerability, disproportionately affecting poor households, women, and children under five. The initiative directly benefits approximately 97,900 people and indirectly benefits an additional 213,800 by establishing a community-based climate-health Early Warning System (EWS), upgrading climate-resilient health facilities, and promoting sustainable community adaptation measures. The project focuses on strengthening the enabling environment for integrating climate information into health service delivery, investing in resilient water, sanitation, and energy infrastructure for health centres, and promoting nature-based solutions and traditional medicine gardens to safeguard livelihoods.
