About this project

On 20 September 2019, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved the Sustainable Rural Infrastructure and Watershed Management Sector Project (SRIWMSP) for $51.5 million financed by an ADB concessional loan of $40.0 million, an ADB grant (ADF) of $5.0 million, a European Union (EU) grant of $4.5 million equivalent, and government contribution of US$2.0 million equivalent. The ADB loan and ADB grant closing date is 31 December 2028, while the EU grant is 30 September 2027. The project aims at improving rural incomes from market-driven diversified farm output, watershed health, and community nutrition in the four northern provinces of Houaphan, Louangphabang, Xaignabouli, and Xiangkhouang by (i) promoting diversification into dry season high-value crops (HVCs) and improving the yields of wet season rice by providing irrigation and access; (ii) protecting watershed ecological services; and (iii) improving nutrition. The project also benefits from parallel co-financing from IFAD of about US$21.0 million and from GIZ of about EUR20 million.
