About this project
El Salvador is highly exposed to natural disasters, which include earthquakes, tropical storms, and floods that have been accentuated by climate change. These hazards tend to affect border regions such as Santa Ana, Ahuachapán, Sonsonate, La Unión, whose communities face overlapping challenges related to disaster risk, displacement, and limited access to basic services. In 2024, persistent heavy rains caused flooding, which further exacerbated displacement and contributed to a national dengue epidemic because of the standing water that breeds mosquitoes. Institutional systems remain weak to manage an appropriate coordinated emergency response, and vulnerable populations face barriers in accessing protection and humanitarian assistance. This project enhances the safety, dignity, and resilience of displaced and mobile individuals in El Salvador by improving temporary shelters, delivering humanitarian assistance, and strengthening institutional systems. It focuses on equipping shelters to meet minimum standards, providing food and non-food items, and developing operational manuals and training programs for government officials. Inclusive approaches ensure the needs of vulnerable groups, including women, children, and persons with disabilities, are prioritized.
