About this project

Due to the improved national stability since 2020, an increasing number of Burundian refugees and migrants have chosen to return and reintegrate into their communities of origin. There are high levels of food insecurity and malnutrition in rural communities. The multiple economic shocks of recent years have exacerbated the country's structural difficulties (fuel shortages, devaluation, inflation, etc.) and increased the needs of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), returnees, refugees and other vulnerable groups. This situation significantly affects the absorption capacity of communities of return, impeding return and reintegration and creating conflicts over land and access to basic services This project builds upon the achievements of the five previous phases, using the momentum generated through the collaboration with the Government of the Republic of Burundi and lessons learned from past and current project implementation. Building on the achievements and lessons learned of the previous programme phases, interventions aim to contribute to national efforts to provide life-saving assistance to returnees through life-saving shelter, water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and non-food items (NFI) assistance to contribute to the return and reintegration of Burundian returnees.
