About this project

South Sudan is experiencing a worsening humanitarian crisis fueled by violence, climate shocks, and economic decline, with over 10 million people projected to need assistance in 2026. The ongoing war in Sudan has driven the arrival of more than 1.3 million returnees and refugees since April 2023. Ongoing conflict and fragility in Upper Nile, Unity and Jonglei and looming threats of flooding this rainy season have further increased the number of displaced people in need of urgent assistance. This joint UNHCR-IOM action aims to provide life-saving support for newly arriving refugees, asylum-seekers and returnees from Sudan, and emergency life-saving protection and humanitarian assistance to internally displaced persons in Jonglei, Unity, Upper Nile, and across the country.
