About this project

This project is part of the response to two tropical cyclones (Judy and Kevin) that made landfall over Vanuatu on the 1st and 3rd of March 2023, affecting more than 80 percent of the population. The Government of Vanuatu declared a State of Emergency and commissioned a Post-Disaster Needs Assessment to analyse the human and economic impacts and to devise a recovery plan to transition the country back on its development pathway. The assessment estimated the total effects (damage and loss) to amount to some USD$433 million. Total recovery needs were estimated to be USD $773 million. In line with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, the overall objective of the project is “to strengthen institutional capacity to consider and reduce risks associated with human mobility issues.” The project contributes to the following outcomes: Outcome 1: National authorities have access to improved tools, knowledge, and skills to monitor and manage displacement risks in urban and peri-urban areas. Outcome 2: At risk-communities are resilient to disaster and displacement risks. Outcome 3: At-risk communities benefit from improved operational capacity to respond to and recover from disaster and displacement risks.
