About this project
This project aims to strengthen fire safety and emergency response capacity in Majuro, the capital of the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), a nation increasingly vulnerable to urban fires due to rapid population growth, dense settlements, limited infrastructure, and constrained emergency response capabilities. Currently, firefighting resources are insufficient to effectively address structural fires, aviation emergencies, and weather-related hazards, thereby risking significant damage to critical infrastructure, cultural assets, and public safety. The project's primary objectives are to procure two fire trucks equipped with spare parts and essential firefighting equipment, enhance the skills and knowledge of local firefighting personnel through comprehensive training programs for operating and maintaining fire trucks, and engage the community through an official handover ceremony with key stakeholders. These efforts aim to improve emergency response times, reduce fire-related incidents, and build local resilience. Implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), leveraging its logistical expertise and operational capacity, the initiative supports the United States Government (USG) priorities of disaster risk reduction, capacity building, and sustainable development within Pacific island nations.
