About this project

The Philippines has been experiencing increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events due to climate change, with an average 20 typhoons each year. This occurs alongside heavy rainfall, floods, landslides, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions. The recurrent disasters and displacements due to various hazards, combined with pre-existing vulnerabilities of chronic poverty and underdevelopment, have already depleted their capacities for disaster preparedness and response. With soaring global energy and fuel prices, the current capacity of evacuation centres (ECs) only adds more strain on these seasonally displaced communities, which are among the most impacted by climate change in the world. Building on the first phase of the Generating Renewable and Innovative Designs for Displacement (GRID), this new phase will scale the renewable energy model for evacuation centres, thereby strengthening disaster preparedness and response capacities in additional at-risk communities. The project ensures that evacuation centres, which often serve as the first line of protection during displacement, are equipped with sustainable energy systems that provide reliable power both during normal times and emergencies.
