About this project

This project strengthens disaster preparedness in Southern Africa by helping governments act early before hazards turn into humanitarian crises. Building on previous work that established anticipatory action systems in several countries, the initiative expands support to Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Madagascar. It promotes a coordinated, multi‑hazard approach that enables governments and regional bodies to plan ahead, protect communities, and reduce losses. The project will harmonize forecasting and early action frameworks across the Southern African region, including tools that help anticipate population movements during emergencies. At the national level, it will integrate anticipatory action into government systems, while also reinforcing links between early warning information and social protection programmes so that families receive timely assistance.Innovative financing models, such as impact‑based funding and risk‑pooling mechanisms, will ensure rapid release of resources when pre‑agreed thresholds are reached. The initiative will also produce evidence, including return‑on‑investment studies and best‑practice documentation, to inform future decision‑making.By supporting locally led systems and strengthening national and regional institutions, the project will contribute to faster, more predictable, and more sustainable disaster management across Southern Africa.
