About this project
Colombia faces increasing climate-related displacement driven by extreme weather events, particularly flooding and drought, which disproportionately affect vulnerable populations in regions such as Córdoba and La Guajira. Despite growing evidence of the link between climate change and human mobility, national and humanitarian actors still lack the operational tools and methodologies needed to anticipate, estimate, and respond effectively to climate-induced displacement. This project aims to strengthen the technical and methodological capacities of the Government of Colombia and humanitarian actors to anticipate, estimate, and respond to climate-related human displacement, through the development and validation of operational tools in prioritized territories. To achieve this, IOM will implement two complementary pilots: one in Córdoba focused on estimating human mobility associated with flooding events, and one in La Guajira focused on drought-related displacement risk, integrating remote sensing and Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) data. The evidence generated will contribute directly to strengthening the institutional frameworks and planning processes of the Government of Colombia and humanitarian actors, supporting a more evidence-based and coordinated approach to climate mobility.
