About this project
The project will support Italy's response to increased migrant arrivals in Sicily, particularly by relieving pressure on Lampedusa. IOM will implement it with the Italian Red Cross under the coordination of the Ministry of Interior. IOM will arrange safe and dignified transfers by air, sea and ground from Lampedusa, and, when necessary, elsewhere in Sicily, to reception facilities across Italy. Vulnerable migrants, including applicants for international protection, will be prioritized. Working with Italian authorities, EU agencies and UN partners, IOM will deploy multidisciplinary teams of operational staff, cultural mediators and medical professionals. The project follows international protection standards, supports EU migration objectives and continues the EU-funded "EU Su-Port to Lampedusa" initiative implemented between July 2023 and September 2024.
