About this project
2024 marks the seventh year since the Rohingya population's mass displacement from Myanmar to Bangladesh. The Rohingya continue to face dangers posed by natural hazards, disease outbreaks, and a deteriorating protection environment. As the crisis becomes further protracted, the Rohingya living in the camps in Cox's Bazar are increasingly dependent on aid with little prospect for durable solutions. Significant use of firewood continues, while agricultural land near camps has suffered from siltation and increased risk of flash floods and landslides. In response, IOM established the Safe Access to Fuel and Energy (SAFEPlus) programme to meet the immediate need for safer and sustainable cooking fuel through the provision of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) to combat deforestation, rehabilitate impacted environments, and reduce health concerns and protection risks. In this project, IOM is supporting 202,780 Rohingya households in 17 camps by providing LPG refills to be used as cooking fuel. Porter assistance is also available for extremely vulnerable individuals who may face access challenges. This contributes to ensuring all households under the IOM Area of Responsibility in Cox’s Bazar has sufficient fuel for daily use.
