About this project
Western Afghanistan particularly Herat is facing a severe, multi-layered crisis driven by mass forced returns, economic decline, drought, and escalating protection risks. Since January 2025, approximately 1.66 million Afghans have been forcibly returned from Iran, nearly all undocumented, with Herat absorbing the majority and overwhelming basic services. Implemented under a joint programme with UNDP, UNHCR, UN-Habitat, and IOM, this project component focuses on sustaining essential services through strengthened service delivery and community infrastructure. It aims to ensure that shelters, are functional, sustained, and expanded to meet the diverse needs of women and men, while supporting inclusive recovery and resilience at the community level in Herat province, Afghansitan.
