About this project
The frequency of extreme rainfall events has increased in Lao PDR, and cities in Lao PDR have been facing increasing difficulties in managing floods. Poor local and village level planning, insufficient enforcement and protection of critical flood-beneficial ecosystems, poor management of localized canal and ditches, declining localized agriculture and aquaculture practices and low levels of disaster preparedness all contribute to the ongoing vulnerability to flood events of marginalized urban communities in Lao PDR. Nature-based solutions provide a cost-effective approach to reducing community-level urban flood risk and vulnerability by restoring ecosystems and waterways for improved flood management. Such nature-based solutions can reduce pluvial flood events, reduce heat island effects, improve ground water recharge, improve wastewater management, reduce total run-off and increase fish and plant stocks, all of which support improvements in community level resilience. As such, this project aims to reduce the vulnerability of urban communities by delivering community-oriented, inclusive and human rights supportive interventions to restore ecosystem functioning in selected sites in Vientiane Capital. The program is proposed to last two phases of five years each (ten years in total) and will undertake extensive flood resilience improvements through nature-based solutions around Nong Loup Ian wetland and Nam Ping River and wetland, both in Vientiane Capital. Across these two ph…
