About this project

In Burkina Faso, the production of white meat is widely practiced. Poultry is raised in large quantities to satisfy a growing demand for animal protein, in a country where the production of red meat from small and large transhumant ruminant farms is brought to its knees by terrorism. The availability of fodder and concentrated feed for intensive breeding is limited and production costs are excessive. Rabbit farming requires less space and resources than poultry and the production of emissions is reduced. Rabbit farming is an activity that can be managed with low investments and is often practiced at family level. Chicken production is more extensive and industrialized but presents greater problems from the point of view of the control of infectious diseases relevant to public health, such as avian influenza. The initiative aims to enhance the productivity and sustainability of rabbit farming, which presents fewer risks to human health, through research, training and development activities.
