MAWARID (resources): Managing Agriculture, WAste and water to Reach an Inclusive Development

About this project

The Mawarid initiative works in the Governorate of Ben Arous, Tunisia, to address the nexus between sustainable agricultural production, food security and nutrition. Through a set of actions aimed at adapting agriculture to climate change and the increasing scarcity of resources, the project intends to promote the dissemination of sustainable agricultural practices and the reuse of available resources, focusing mainly on purified wastewater and organic waste, as well as supporting agricultural incomes through the marketing of products with high nutritional quality. The main target of the initiative is a group of farmers who will be accompanied in the agroecological transition, with the aim of reducing the environmental impact of their production. In parallel, environmental awareness is expected to have a positive impact on the nutrition of children, especially school children, through the connection between sustainable agricultural production and school canteens. The project stems from the urgent need to intervene on land and water resources, which are suffering from the combined effects of climate crises and the current agricultural production model, characterized by high consumption of water and chemicals.
