FASSA - Agro-Sustainable Value Chain for Food Security

About this project

Fassa is the ancestral name in Tunisian dialect of one of the most widespread fodder crops in the country. The FASSA project - Agro-Sustainable Value Chain for Food Security is grounded in the capitalization of the experiences of the project partners (COSPE, ATAE, Shanti, UNFT and COOPERMONDO) to provide an integrated and effective response to the need for transition towards agricultural and social development models -economically sustainable in the Tunisian regions of Jendouba, Kairouan and Mahdia. The initiative contributes to food security in Tunisia (Nutrition) by promoting access to sufficient and safe nutrition (SDG 2.1), through agroecological interventions that support the environment by strengthening the resilience of the land (Aid to environment). Therefore, the project contributes to preventing natural disasters (DDR), through participatory processes that make communities protagonists of change (Participatory Development) and by placing women at the center of the process of safeguarding food security and sovereignty, as drivers of change (Gender Equality). The difficulty in achieving the objectives of food security and sovereignty in Tunisia are connected to the impoverishment of the agricultural sector which has to face multiple challenges including the reduction of available manpower, the dependence on international markets for the import of seeds and food products and the deterioration of natural resources due to unsustainable agricultural exploitation and clim…
