Greening Uganda - Reforestation, sustainable agriculture and effective water resource management

About this project

The proposal aims to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of the population living in the Karamoja region (Uganda), through integrated actions in the environmental sector in line with SDGs 2, 13 and 15. The initiative aims to mitigate the negative effects of climate change and improve the drought and soil degradation resilience of communities in Napak, Moroto, Nabilatuk and Nakapiripirit Districts. The need assessment demonstrated the need to reach, through a series of targeted actions, students, families residing in rural areas, agricultural producers and key figures in institutions to enable changes in the behaviour of individuals and in the responsiveness of institutions in one of the most vulnerable areas of the country in terms of climate, geography, social and political aspects. The initiative proposes three lines of synergetic action: 1) Strengthening the resilience and capacity of rural communities to manage natural and energy resources, through training activities for students from 30 schools in the area and neighborhood communities on climate-smart practices (meal preparation systems with improved kitchens, energy production from renewable sources, rainwater harvesting, agroforestry techniques). In the most water-stressed areas, groundwater monitoring systems will be installed and wells will be rehabilitated for use by schools and communities.
