About this project
The initiative is based on a challenge: to turn the negative effects of climate change into an opportunity to increase effectiveness and sustainability of the local agro-food system producing a positive impact on the environment, the people, and the local economy. The final objective of the initiative is to contribute to mitigating the link between environmental degradation and hunger in the event of extreme weather events - floods - in Chad, by reducing the negative socio-economic impact on the local community (SDG 15.3). This need arises from the identified needs in the intervention areas where fluvial floods, caused by heavy rains, constantly occur, not in an emergency or occasional manner. This triggers: a continuous halt in local agricultural production with drastic effects on the availability and quality of food for auto-consumption and selling purposed; the reduction of the main economic income; environmental degradation due to the dispersion of crops, materials, and destruction of private shelters into the environment. Currently, no techniques or practices are employed by the local population to mitigate or reduce the effects of floods on agricultural production. This puts the availability of food, its quality and safety, environmental protection, and the economic development of the areas at risk. Therefore, the initiative aims to: increase agricultural productivity and the income of small-scale food producers through safe access to productive inputs, knowledge, mark…
