About this project

“SUSTAIN-RW: Sustainable Agricultura and Irrigation for Food Security in Rwanda” came from a need in the Gicumbi District, in the Northern Province of the country, which is located in an area at risk of drought. The aim of the project is to improve hilly agriculture and reduce erosion through the creation of terraces and the creation of a high-altitude irrigation system, as well as through specific training on sustainable agriculture and water harvest techniques. The intervention involves achieving a single result, R1: Improving food security by increasing productivity through sustainable and irrigated agriculture. To achieve this, it intends to proceed on several fronts: - rehabilitate a decommissioned hydroelectric dam and create, starting from the reservoir, a pipeline for the irrigation of part of the land. - train the technical staff of the District in sustainable agriculture and water harvest techniques, in order to train the entire agricultural population of the Cell - train District health personnel on the prevention and treatment of malnutrition. An area affected by the intervention will see the construction of terraces on the hillsides in order to stabilize the soil and reduce the risk of erosion. In the same area, an irrigation system will be built which will take advantage of the pre-existing dam.
