About this project
The initiative "Technical Support for Enhancing Marine Wealth Governance in Libya" aims to develop a sustainable and inclusive fishery sector by strengthening institutional capacities, upgrading infrastructures, and introducing innovative practices along the fishery value chain. With a duration of 30 months and a budget of €3.5 million, the project focuses on the coastal areas of Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, engaging fishermen, women, and traders from the main fish markets in Libya. The general objective is to strengthen the Italy-Libya partnership in the blue economy, improving artisanal fishing and the living conditions of coastal communities while contributing to stability and peace. The project fosters collaboration between institutions, private operators, and local communities, ensuring sustainability and equitable distribution of benefits. The main activities include training on food safety and best practices, the rehabilitation of fish markets, improving data collection, and promoting aquaculture. The initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 2 (end hunger) and SDG 14 (sustainable use of marine ecosystems), as well as with the strategic priorities of Italian and Libyan cooperation for food security and sustainable development.
