About this project
Jordan faces one of the most severe water crises globally, driven by extreme water scarcity, climate variability, groundwater over-abstraction, land degradation, and increasing exposure to floods and droughts. These challenges are particularly evident in the Azraq, Amman–Zarqa, Yarmouk, and Northern Jordan Valley basins, where declining groundwater levels, unpredictable rainfall, and recurring flash floods threaten livelihoods, infrastructure, and ecosystems. In northern and eastern governorates—including Irbid, Mafraq, Zarqa, Balqa, Ajloun, Jerash, and eastern Amman—these pressures are further compounded in areas hosting refugees and vulnerable communities. The 3Rs for Resilience (Retention, Recharge, Reuse) project responds to these interconnected challenges by scaling climate-smart water management solutions that strengthen water security, reduce climate risks, and enhance institutional resilience. The project builds on the achievements and lessons of the first 3Rs phase (2021–2025), funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which demonstrated the effectiveness of water harvesting interventions in reducing flood impacts, improving groundwater recharge, restoring degraded landscapes, and supporting agricultural livelihoods. Phase 1 also generated valuable technical knowledge, datasets, and institutional partnerships, while initiating national policy dialogue on water harvesting. Building on this foundation, the new project represents a shift from pilot inter…
