About this project

ltpgtXudur and Tayeeglow districts in Bakool Region, South Central Somalia, are among the areas most severely affected by recurrent drought, protracted conflict, displacement, and chronic underinvestment in basic social services. The convergence of these shocks has critically undermined household coping capacities, especially in rural and hard-to-reach villages, driving sharp deterioration in health and nutrition indicators. Five consecutive failed or underperforming rainy seasons (2020-2025) have triggered catastrophic livestock mortality (40-60%), near-total crop failure (87% reduction), and massive internal displacement (85,000 IDPs in Xudur, 42,000 in Tayeeglow). The FSNAU post-Gu nutrition assessment (September 2025) documented critical levels of acute malnutrition: Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) rates of 18.2% in Xudur and 19.7% in Tayeeglow, both far exceeding the WHO emergency threshold of 15%. Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) prevalence stands at 3.8% in Xudur and 4.2% in Tayeeglow. Under-five crude mortality rates have reached 1.2 deaths/10,000/day, exceeding emergency thresholds. The October 2025 IPC analysis classified 67% of the population in both districts as facing Crisis (IPC Phase 3) or worse acute food insecurity, with 18,000 people in Xudur and 12,000 in Tayeeglow in Emergency (IPC Phase 4). Nationally, food insecurity is projected to affect 4.4 million Somalis between October 2025 and March 2026. The existing health system has collapsed under crisis press…
